Landslide destroyed 30 homes and affected 101 people in Sukabumi.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Sixty four people survived a deadly landslide that hit Cimapag area in Sirnaresmi village, Cisolok Subdistrict, Sukabumi District, West Java Province, on Dec 31, 2018. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that on Sunday.

The agency's spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said that the catastrophe had killed 31 people. Two people went missing and four others injured by the disaster.

"The wounded survivors have been receiving medical treatment at Pelabuhan Ratu hospital," he said, adding that a joint search and rescue team, coordinated by the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), continued its search effort to find the missing victims.

According to BNPB, Sukabumi is one of the districts in West Java Province, which is prone to landslides. Over the past 10 years, the district had experienced some 132 landslides, and several of which resulted in fatalities and damages.

The landslides that happened on March 28, 2015 in Cireunghas Sub-district, Sukabumi District, for instance, killed 12 people, affected 293 people, and damaged 11 houses.

In connection with the landslide mitigation, Nugroho said serious attention needs to be paid to such structural mitigation-related efforts as cliff reinforcement, installation of landslide early warning systems, reforestation as well as those related to non-structural mitigation, including mapping, socialization, spatial planning, and disaster management education.

"The peak of the rainy season in most parts of Indonesia occurs from January to February. During the rainy season, people are encouraged to stay alert," he added.
